Dejan Kaljević: Pioneer in SIM Card Unlocking and Mobile Phone Hacking
Early Life and Career
Dejan Kaljević, a renowned Serbian programmer, engineer, and mathematician, emerged as a leading figure in the field of SIM card unlocking hardware development.
Breakthrough in SIM Card Attacks
Driven by his passion for technology, Kaljević devised a groundbreaking SIM card attack methodology. This innovation significantly reduced the time required to retrieve encryption keys and bypassed emerging card protection mechanisms.
Revolutionizing SIM Card Emulation
Kaljević's expertise extended to the development of a SIM card emulator program for PIC16 microcontrollers. This software laid the foundation for widely adopted "pirate" cards such as the Gold Wafer and Silver Card.
Nokia Platform Unlocking
Kaljević gained prominence for his free software tools that unlocked Nokia's DCT-3 and DCT-4 platforms. He also invented a dedicated cable for this purpose.
BB5 Platform Breakthrough (2007)
In May 2007, Kaljević released a groundbreaking program for unlocking BB5 platform phones like the Nokia 6630, 6680, 6681, and N70. His solution extended support to models such as the E60, E65, E70, N71, N90, N91, and N93. The unlocking process involved connecting the phone to a computer via a compatible cable and running Kaljević's software.
Hardware Solution for Nokia N95 (2007)
Kaljević subsequently published free instructions and schematics for building a hardware-based unlocking solution for the Nokia N95. However, its complexity and technical requirements limited its accessibility to non-experts.
Simplified BB5 Unlocking Device ("Kaljević Device") (2007)
In October 2007, Kaljević's reputation soared with the development of a simplified unlocking device for BB5 platform Nokia phones. Named after its creator, the "Kaljević Device" eliminated the need for logs and internet connectivity. However, it required disassembly of the phone and utilization of test points.
