"Maverick" and "Leave It to Beaver"

Diane Brewster achieved widespread recognition for her three distinct roles in American television during the 1950s and 1960s. In "Maverick" (1957-1959), a Western comedy-drama, she portrayed Samantha Crawford, a charming con artist with a Southern drawl. Despite her criminal nature, Crawford was a likable character, thanks in part to being named after the mother of the show's creator, Roy Huggins.

In "Leave It to Beaver" (1957-1958), a sitcom centered around a young boy's adventures, Brewster played Miss Canfield, an elementary school teacher. Although she initially appeared as Miss Simms, a secretary in the pilot episode, she reprised the role of Miss Canfield in the series' revival, "Still the Beaver" (1983-1986).

"The Fugitive" and Other Roles

In the crime drama "The Fugitive" (1963-1967), Brewster appeared in flashbacks as the murdered wife of the protagonist. She also had notable appearances in "Crusader," a Cold War drama; "Harbor Command," a show about the United States Coast Guard; and "Mike Hammer," a detective series.

Personal Life and Legacy

In February 1959, Diane Brewster married Dr. Jabe Walker, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. They had two children together. Brewster passed away on November 12, 1991, at the age of 60, from heart failure.

Descendant of Mayflower Pilgrims

Interestingly, Diane Brewster was a direct descendant of William Brewster, a leader of the Pilgrim settlers and a spiritual advisor to the Plymouth Colony. He arrived in America aboard the Mayflower in 1620. Another famous ancestor was Governor William Bradford, another Mayflower passenger. Brewster's career as an actress left a lasting impact on television, showcasing her versatility and talent in a wide range of roles.
