Biography of Dilip Changvi
Dilip Changvi, the owner of SPIL company, is one of the wealthiest individuals in India. Born in 1962, he graduated from the University of Calcutta with a degree in Commerce. Coming from a modest background, Dilip was the first in his family to venture into entrepreneurship.
In 1983, he founded SPIL, which later became the fifth-largest pharmaceutical manufacturer in India. The success and growth of Sun Pharmaceutical Industries, where Dilip serves as Chairman and Managing Director, can be attributed to the high quality and affordable prices of its products. With six manufacturing plants in India and the first plant in Detroit, USA established in 1996, the company has achieved a turnover of approximately 5 billion Indian rupees, equivalent to 117 million dollars, in 2000.
Dilip Changvi is also the Vice President of the Indian Pharmaceutical Association (IPA), which was formed by eight companies in November 1999 and now comprises thirty enterprises. The company's pharmaceutical exports amount to around 5.6 billion rupees, accounting for a third of India's total pharmaceutical exports. Moreover, Sun Pharmaceutical Industries caters to over 30% of the domestic market in India.
Additionally, Dilip Changvi established a research center that annually allocates approximately 4% of the company's total income. The products of Sun Pharmaceutical Industries are sold in retail stores across the CIS countries, Europe, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Latin America, and North America.
