Dimitar Grekov: Statesman and Prime Minister of Bulgaria

Dimitar Panayotov Grekov, a prominent Bulgarian statesman, served as Prime Minister of Bulgaria from January 30 to October 13, 1899.

Early Life and Education

Born in 1847 in Bolgrad (then Bessarabia, now Ukraine), Grekov received his secondary education in his hometown. He pursued law in Paris and later became a member of the judiciary and an advocate in Romania.

Political Career in Bulgaria

After Bulgaria's liberation from Ottoman rule in 1878, Grekov returned to his homeland and entered politics. He served as a member of the Constituent Assembly in Tarnovo, where he aligned himself with the Conservative Party.

Under Prince Alexander Battenberg's first government in July 1879, Grekov held the post of Minister of Justice. He also served as Minister of Justice under Russian generals Sobolev and Stoilov in 1882-1883.

After Battenberg's Abdication

Following Battenberg's abdication, Grekov was among the delegates who sought a new candidate for the Bulgarian throne from the Great Powers. After Prince Ferdinand ascended to the throne, Grekov continued to serve as Minister of Justice.

Prime Ministership

Grekov served as Minister of Foreign Affairs under Stambolov from 1890 to 1894. After Stambolov's government collapsed, Grekov formed a cabinet that ruled from January to October 1899. He was the first Prime Minister representing the Stambolovist Party.
