Biography of Dina Pathak
Dina Pathak, also known as Deena Pathak, was an Indian theater and film actress. She was born in 1922 in Bhavnagar, Gujarat, India. Despite coming from a conservative family, with her father being a Brahmin, Dina was fascinated by cinema, theater, and fashion from a young age. She actively participated in school plays and later joined the Indian National Theatre. Dina pursued her higher education at Bombay College.

Early Career
Dina quickly gained attention and love from the audience when she started performing on stage. In the late 1940s, people would line up to watch her performances in the play "Maina Gurjari." During that time, she collaborated with the Indian People's Theatre Association, where her two sisters also worked. It was in 1948 that Dina made her film debut in the Gujarati language film "Kariyawar." However, she returned to theater and only came back to cinema two decades later.

Rise to Fame
In 1966, at the age of 44, Dina appeared in Basu Bhattacharya's film "Uski Kahani," for which she won the Bengal Journalists Association Award. During the 1960s, she starred in several films, including Hrishikesh Mukherjee's family drama "Satyakam." Dina became known for portraying strong female characters, often playing the roles of mothers and grandmothers. She garnered immense popularity and was adored by the audience for her performances.

Notable Films
Dina's notable films include the comedy "Gol Maal" (1979) and "Khoobsurat" (1980), both directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee. She also appeared in Ketan Mehta's film "Bhavni Bhavai" and Balu's "Woh 7 Din" in the 1980s. In 1984, Dina was cast in David Lean's British-Indian film "A Passage to India." During this period, she delivered a powerful performance in Ketan Mehta's drama "Mirch Masala," in which her daughters, Supriya and Ratna, also acted.
Personal Life and Legacy
Dina Pathak was married to Baldev Pathak, and they had two children together. Interestingly, both her daughters also found success in the film industry. Supriya married actor and screenwriter Pankaj Kapur, while Ratna married director and actor Naseeruddin Shah. Throughout her career, Dina played around 130 roles.
In the new millennium, she showcased her talent in Deepa Mehta's Canadian-Indian comedy "Bollywood/Hollywood," earning a nomination for the Genie Awards for Best Supporting Actress. In 2002, she played her final role in Chandra Prakash Dwivedi's drama "Pinjar." Sadly, Dina Pathak passed away on October 11, 2003, in Bandra, Mumbai, due to a prolonged illness that culminated in a heart attack.
Dina Pathak is remembered today as a revered and respected theater and film actress. She founded her own theater company, "Natmandal," and actively advocated for women's rights as the chairperson of the National Federation of Indian Women (NIFW).
