Evgeny Avaliyani: A Master of Poetic Innovation
Early Life and EducationEvgeny Avaliyani was born in Moscow to Evgeny Avaliyani Sr., a renowned book graphic artist. After graduating from Moscow State University with a degree in economic geography of the USSR, he worked in his field for an extended period. Subsequently, due to the onset of Bekhterev's disease, he took on a modest job as a security guard.
Literary Career
During the late 1960s and early 1970s, Avaliyani became affiliated with the literary group of Ioffe-Saburov in Moscow. His writing spanned various genres, including the palindrome and visual poetry. Despite remaining unpublished until 1992, he released four books of poetry and other experimental texts between 1995 and 2000.
Untimely Demise
Tragically, Avaliyani's life was cut short in an accidental pedestrian-car collision.
Poetic Style
Avaliyani's poetry is characterized by its lyrical fluidity and elegant phrasing, reminiscent of Osip Mandelstam's early 1930s work. However, it is primarily for his groundbreaking contributions to the palindrome and visual poetry that he is celebrated.
Pioneering the Russian Palindrome
Alongside Vladimir Gershuni, Elena Katsuba, and Nikolai Ladygin, Avaliyani is considered a pioneer of contemporary Russian palindromes. He developed a masterful command of this challenging poetic form, crafting palindromic phrases and lines that could be read forwards and backwards with perfect symmetry.
Innovations in Visual Poetry
Avaliyani's innovations extended to the realm of visual poetry. He invented the "listovertny," a unique form where a brief text of a few words or lines, when flipped 180 or 90 degrees, reveals a different text or, occasionally, the same text in mirrored form.
Other Literary Experiments
Avaliyani's experimental spirit led him to explore other rare and demanding literary techniques, such as pantorhymes, anagrams, and various other novel forms of verse.
