Early Life and Career

Denis Semchenkowas born on August 28, 1983 in Mogilev, Belarus. He commenced his journalistic journey at Mogilev Television in 2008. From 2009 to 2020, he was employed by ONT television channel.

Rise to Prominence

In 2012, Semchenko emerged as the victor of Belarus's "Televershina" National Television Contest, earning recognition as the country's top reporter. His incisive criticisms of Moscow's policies towards Belarus in televised programs gained him widespread attention in Russian media. He sparked significant controversy with his scathing critiques of Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev and LDPR leader Vladimir Zhirinovsky, who had advocated for Belarus's annexation by Russia.

Political Dissent

In August 2020, Semchenko resigned as head of ONT's "presidential pool" in protest against the violence that erupted following the presidential election in Belarus. He condemned the actions of Belarusian security forces and was subsequently arrested. Before his detention, he had provided interviews to various media outlets, including Ksenia Sobchak, who remarked that "Semchenko's arrest is like arresting [Vladimir] Pozner for his Instagram posts."

Imprisonment and Release

In September 2020, Semchenko was convicted by the Frunzensky District Court in Minsk for participating in an unauthorized mass gathering. He was detained in the Okrestina and Zhodzina prisons. Upon his release, he expressed no regrets for his actions.
