Early Life and Immigration
Dmitri Salita was born in Odessa, Ukraine, as Dmitry Aleksandrovich Lekhtman. When he was just 13, he began his boxing journey. In 1991, Salita and his family immigrated to the United States.
Arrival in Brooklyn and Embrace of Orthodox Judaism
Upon settling in Brooklyn, Salita encountered Orthodox Judaism and became a devout adherent. He adheres strictly to Jewish law, scheduling his fights to begin after sundown on Saturdays, the end of Shabbat. "Anyone who wants a good whuppin' from me is just going to have to wait until sundown," he famously said.
Observant Lifestyle and Strict Dietary Practices
Salita observes approximately 70 Jewish holy days each year during which he abstains from fighting. He maintains a kosher diet and resides within walking distance of a synagogue to facilitate his Friday and Saturday religious obligations. Additionally, he refrains from driving during Shabbat.
Transition to Boxing Promoter
In April 2011, Salita retired from boxing and transitioned into the role of boxing promoter. He became the President of Salita Promotions, a Brooklyn-based company.
