Biography of Dante Ferretti

Dante Ferretti, an Italian costume designer, production designer, and art director, is a recipient of the Academy Awards and BAFTA, as well as a Knight of the Order of Merit for the Italian Republic. He was born on February 26, 1943, in Macerata, Italy.

Collaboration with Renowned Directors

Throughout his career, Ferretti has worked with numerous acclaimed directors, both American and Italian. Some of the notable names include Pier Paolo Pasolini, Federico Fellini, Terry Gilliam, Franco Zeffirelli, Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, Anthony Minghella, and Tim Burton. He frequently collaborates with his wife, designer Francesca Lo Schiavo.

Ferretti was a protégé of Federico Fellini and worked with him on five films. He also collaborated with Pier Paolo Pasolini on five occasions and later developed a close professional relationship with Martin Scorsese, working on eleven of his films.

Awards and Recognition

In 2008, Ferretti designed the sets for David Cronenberg's opera "The Fly," which was staged at the Châtelet Theatre in Paris. He has received three Academy Awards for Best Production Design for the films "The Aviator," "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street," and "Hugo." Additionally, he has been nominated for the Academy Awards seven times, including one nomination for Best Costume Design for the film "Kundun." Ferretti has also won four BAFTA awards.

Order of Merit and Other Accomplishments

On May 3, 2005, Ferretti was awarded the Order of Merit for the Italian Republic. In 2012, he designed the interior of the Salumeria Rosi Parmacotto restaurant located in the Upper East Side of Manhattan.

For the 2015 Milan Expo, Ferretti was commissioned to create a series of statues on the theme of "Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life." He is also a member of the Italy-USA Foundation.
