Dobri Dzhurov: A Military and Political Leader
Early Life and EducationDobri Dzhurov was born into a peasant family in Bulgaria. He initially studied at a Sofia seminary, but was expelled for revolutionary activities. He later completed his religious education in Plovdiv.
Political Involvement
In 1932, Dzhurov joined the Workers' Youth Union, the communist youth organization. In 1938, he became a member of the Bulgarian Communist Party (BKP). From 1939 to 1940, he served as a soldier in the Bulgarian army, where he established a communist underground organization within his regiment.
Partisan Struggle
After the German invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941, Dzhurov played a significant role in preparing for armed resistance against the pro-Nazi regime in Bulgaria. He commanded a partisan detachment, later becoming its commander. Despite facing initial setbacks, the detachment gained a reputation for its successful operations against enemy forces.
Post-War Career
After the establishment of the communist-dominated Fatherland Front government, Dzhurov became the first chief of the Sofia regional police. He later attended the Frunze Military Academy in Moscow before serving in the Bulgarian People's Army. By 1956, he had risen to the position of Deputy Minister of Defense.
Minister of Defense and Political Influence
In 1962, Dzhurov was appointed Minister of Defense, a post he held for 28 years. During his tenure, he emerged as one of the most influential figures in Bulgaria, closely aligned with Communist Party leader Todor Zhivkov. Dzhurov received the rank of Army General in 1962 and became a member of the Politburo in 1977.
Role in Zhivkov's Removal
Despite his close ties to Zhivkov, Dzhurov played a pivotal role in his ouster from power in 1989. Along with Andrei Lukanov and Petar Mladenov, he initiated the Politburo meeting that removed Zhivkov from his post.
Later Years and Legacy
After Zhivkov's downfall, Dzhurov was removed from his ministerial and parliamentary positions. He passed away in 2000 at the age of 86 and was buried with military honors. Dzhurov was awarded the title of Hero of the People's Republic of Bulgaria in 1976 and received numerous other accolades from Bulgaria and other socialist states.
