Biography of Domenico Veneziano

Domenico di Bartolomeo da Venezia, also known as Domenico Veneziano, was an Italian artist and one of the founders of the Florentine School of the 15th century. Not much is known about his birth and childhood, although it is believed that he was born in Venice, as indicated by his surname. He received his education there as well.

As a young boy, Domenico moved to Florence around 1422-23 to become a pupil of Gentile da Fabriano, according to speculations. There are suspicions that Veneziano also worked with Pisanello in Rome from approximately 1423-30.

The first reliable information about Domenico Veneziano is preserved in a letter he sent on April 1, 1438, from Perugia to Florence, in which he offered his services as a painter to the Medici family. Interestingly, the letter itself is included below. The master's signed works are indeed very few, only two have been identified.
