Biography of Domenico Cimarosa

Domenico Cimarosa was an Italian composer, harpsichordist, violinist, and singer. Born to a bricklayer and a laundress, he was left fatherless at the age of seven. Cimarosa entered the "Santa Maria di Loreto" conservatory, where he studied under Gallo and Fenaroli and possibly later with Piccinni.

Marriages and Travels

In 1777, Cimarosa married Costanza Soffi, the daughter of a comedic singer named Cecilia Checchini. After Costanza's death in 1778, he entered into a second marriage with her stepsister, Gaetana, with whom he had two sons.

In 1787, Cimarosa embarked on a triumphant journey to Russia, where he was hailed as the greatest opera composer by various European courts. He returned to his homeland in 1791 and achieved enormous success with the opera "Il matrimonio segreto" (The Secret Marriage).

Troubles and Exile

However, Cimarosa became embroiled in the events surrounding the Parthenopean Republic in Naples. In 1800, during the Bourbon reaction, he was imprisoned for four months. After his release, he found refuge in Venice.
