Biography of Dorian Shainin
Early Life and EducationDorian Shainin was an American engineer, scientist, and professor, best known for his contributions to the theory of industrial problem-solving, reliability analysis, and quality control management. He was born in San Francisco, but grew up in San Francisco, Shanghai, and New York. After completing high school in New York, Dorian enrolled at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and graduated with a degree in aeronautical engineering in 1936.

Professional Career
Following his graduation, Dorian secured a position as an engineer at United Aircraft Corporation. In 1936, the United States' industry began to shift gears towards military needs, and Dorian was tasked with quality control and reliability of the produced goods. By the end of the war, Dorian gained nationwide recognition as the creator of the "Lot Plot" method. This statistical method involved creating a graphical representation to easily understand the probability of an element, comprised of potentially defective parts, needing a thorough inspection and analysis. Dorian's method proved to be more effective than the traditional approach of inspecting every single component. Soon, his techniques were adopted by not only aerospace manufacturers but also the Navy and various industrial companies across the country.

Invention of "The Red X" Concept
Upon the advice of Joseph Juran, a close friend and experienced mentor, Dorian transitioned from engineering to consulting. In 1952, he founded his own consulting firm, Rath & Strong, Inc., based in Lexington, where he served as the Senior Vice President. Dorian made significant contributions to popularizing the Pareto principle, which had previously been applied to the distribution of material goods but was also found to be suitable for defect control. In the 1950s, Dorian Shainin suggested that the Pareto principle could be used to solve problems with multiple variables, where one or two factors had a significant impact on the outcome. He referred to this significant cause as "The Red X."
Contributions to Space Exploration
During the 1960s, Dorian Shainin worked as a consultant on reliability issues for the Grumman Aerospace's lunar module project for NASA. His innovative method for evaluating quality and reliability played a crucial role in the success of the proposed prototype. Subsequent launches confirmed the effectiveness of Shainin's method as there were no failures in 11 manned missions, including six moon landings.
Later Years and Legacy
For 38 years, Dorian Shainin worked with a children's hospital in Connecticut, where his statistical analysis techniques helped solve various problems related to the etiology of diseases and care for disabled children. From 1950 to 1983, he worked at the University of Connecticut primarily involved in educational programs. Dorian Shainin passed away on January 7, 2000, at the age of 85, leaving behind a significant legacy in the fields of quality control, reliability analysis, and problem-solving methodologies.
