Biography of Dutee Chand

Dutee Chand, a young Indian sprinter, was born on February 3, 1996 in Gopalpur, Odisha, India. She grew up as the fourth daughter in a poor family, and from a young age, Dutee had to work and contribute to her family. Her perspective on life changed when she saw her sister, Saraswati Chand, excel in athletics. Inspired by her sister, Dutee started running and quickly gained recognition from various organizations. As a result, she did not struggle to find sponsors, and she currently collaborates with the "Anglian Medal Hunt Company," which supports and sponsors young Indian athletes.

In 2012, at the age of 16, Dutee became the national champion by completing the 100-meter race in an incredible 11.8 seconds. This achievement brought her into the spotlight and instantly earned her the title of "India's hope." In 2013, she continued to impress by winning a bronze medal at a competition in Pune, India. She also reached the final race at the World Youth Championships in Athletics. Later that year, Dutee set two personal records at a local competition, completing the 100-meter race in 11.73 seconds and the 200-meter race in 23.73 seconds. It seemed that Dutee was on the verge of achieving worldwide recognition, but fate had other plans.

Shortly before the Commonwealth Games, the Athletic Federation of India removed Dutee from all races when tests revealed an excessively high level of "male" hormones, known as androgens, in her blood. These hormones are known to influence physical development and theoretically allow Chand to train and progress faster than other women. However, the issue of high androgen levels in female athletes is not new, and in the past, athletes have undergone hormonal treatment to continue competing in their designated gender category. Unfortunately, the situation became unbearable for Chand. With the issue of sexual orientation and identity being a sensitive topic in India, many speculated that Chand intentionally created this problem by using prohibited substances. However, Dutee maintains that she simply wanted to bring glory to her country on the global stage. She asserts that she was born a girl, lived and grew up as a girl, and will always identify as a woman, regardless of her hormone levels.
