Dylan Mulvaney: A Trailblazing Transgender Actress, Advocate, and Viral Sensation
Dylan Mulvaney, an American actress, comedian, and TikTok personality, has made headlines since early 2022 for her raw and honest documentation of her gender transition in a daily video series on TikTok. In October 2022, Mulvaney sat down with US President Joe Biden at the White House to discuss transgender rights. As of April 2023, Mulvaney boasts over 10 million TikTok followers and her "Days of Girlhood" video series has garnered more than a billion views.
Early Life and Education
Born on December 29, 1996, in San Diego, California, Mulvaney graduated from the University of Cincinnati's College-Conservatory of Music in 2019 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre.
Career
2015-2020: Early Acting RolesUpon graduating college, Mulvaney's first significant acting role was as Elder White in The Book of Mormon. The musical tour took Mulvaney across the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Other notable roles included The Grinch in How the Grinch Stole Christmas! at The Old Globe; 8: The Play at Birch North Park Theatre; Next to Normal at Arts Off Broadway; Legally Blonde; Spring Awakening; Bye Bye Birdie; and High School Musical at ACT San Diego. She began posting videos on TikTok around the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, typically garnering a few hundred thousand views.
2021-2022: Transition and Early Media Appearances
Mulvaney came out as a transgender woman during the COVID-19 pandemic while living with her "very conservative family" in her childhood home in San Diego. She began documenting her gender transition in a daily video series on TikTok titled "Days of Girlhood" in March 2022, and her videos started to gain traction.
In October 2022, Mulvaney appeared on a podcast for the beauty brand Ulta Beauty alongside gender-fluid hairstylist David Lopez, where she discussed her childhood, coming out as transgender, and her transition. The video sparked the hashtag #BoycottUlta to trend on Twitter, and Mulvaney faced transphobic comments. Later that October, Mulvaney met with President Joe Biden at a town hall event hosted by online news outlet NowThis News. When Mulvaney asked about recent legislation by Republican-led states that restrict gender-affirming care for transgender youth, Biden called it "outrageous" and "immoral."
Following her meeting with Biden, Mulvaney became the target of a "smear campaign" from right-wing activists, according to NBC News. Republican Senator Marsha Blackburn shared a tweet in which she attached a TikTok video made by Mulvaney, saying, "Dylan Mulvaney, Joe Biden, and the radical Left are trying to make this insanity normal." Conservative media personality Caitlyn Jenner, who is also a transgender woman, tweeted her agreement with Blackburn's remarks, calling Mulvaney's video "absurd." A few days later, Mulvaney posted a response video to Jenner on TikTok on the 233rd day of her "Days of Girlhood" series, featuring on-screen text that read, "To my followers, please do not send her hate." Mulvaney and Jenner have since directly addressed misgendering and the comments made about her body, as well as lessons Mulvaney has learned from the experience.
In December 2022, Mulvaney confirmed on Instagram that she had undergone facial feminization surgery. She posted a picture of her face on Instagram on January 27 and made her red carpet debut at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards on February 5, 2023. She received the Queerties Groundbreaker Award in Hollywood in late February.
On March 13, 2023, Mulvaney hosted a live entertainment show at the Rainbow Room in Midtown Manhattan to celebrate the one-year anniversary of her TikTok video series Days of Girlhood called Dylan Mulvaney's Day 365 Live!, featuring Elle Morgan Lea and Rene Rapp as guest stars. Her appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show that day, during which Mulvaney spoke with Barrymore about "battling online hate," resulted in an "onslaught of online hate" directed at Barrymore, according to the Los Angeles Times. On Instagram, Mulvaney shared a letter from Vice President Kamala Harris congratulating her on the one-year anniversary of her transition.
On April 1, 2023, Mulvaney promoted the beer brand Bud Light in an Instagram video related to March Madness, the NCAA men's college basketball tournament. According to The Washington Post, the endorsement led to right-wing media outlets, such as Fox News, mentioning Mulvaney nearly a dozen times over the next three days in "disparaging and often transphobic terms." The sponsorship prompted calls for conservatives to boycott Bud Light. In response to the sponsorship, singer Kid Rock was filmed shooting several Bud Light cans with an MP5 submachine gun in a protest video. Several Budweiser plants also received bomb threats in response.
Mulvaney also promoted a Nike sports bra in a sponsored Instagram post in April 2023, prompting Olympic swimmer Sharron Davies to call for a boycott of Nike. A backlash and boycott calls soon followed for cosmetics company Maybelline after Mulvaney posted a short video using the company's products.
In response to the events, Mulvaney said, "I'm struggling to make sense of the need to dehumanize and be cruel. I just don't think that's right. Dehumanizing has never fixed anything in the history of the world." Mulvaney discussed the events in detail for the first time in a video posted in late June, speaking about the harassment and personal attacks she experienced and the lack of contact with Bud Light executives in the wake of the events. She stated, "I'm not telling you this because I want your pity. I'm telling you this because if this is my experience from a very privileged point of view, know that it is a lot, lot worse for other trans people."
