Eddie Clarke was a British rock musician, guitarist, and singer. He gained fame through his involvement in the heavy metal bands Motörhead and Fastway, as well as his collaboration with Phil Taylor. In 2004, he was ranked 43rd on Guitar World magazine's list of the 100 greatest heavy metal guitarists of all time.
Early Life and Career
Eddie Clarke was born on October 5, 1950, in Twickenham, Middlesex, England. He developed an interest in music at a young age and began playing guitar in local bands during his teenage years. Clarke's passion for rock and metal music led him to join various bands, honing his skills as a guitarist and vocalist.
Breakthrough with Motörhead
In 1976, Eddie Clarke joined the iconic heavy metal band Motörhead, replacing previous guitarist Larry Wallis. The band's lineup, consisting of Ian "Lemmy" Kilmister, Phil "Philthy Animal" Taylor, and Clarke, became known as the classic Motörhead lineup. Together, they released several successful albums, including "Ace of Spades" and "Overkill," which solidified their status as one of the most influential bands in the genre.
Fastway and Solo Career
After leaving Motörhead in 1982 due to creative differences, Clarke formed the band Fastway with former UFO bassist Pete Way. Fastway released several albums and gained moderate success, particularly in the United States. Clarke also embarked on a solo career, releasing albums such as "It Ain't Over till It's Over" and "Make My Day - Back to Blues."
Legacy and Death
Eddie Clarke's contributions to the world of heavy metal music were highly regarded. In recognition of his talent, he was ranked 43rd in Guitar World magazine's list of the 100 greatest heavy metal guitarists of all time in 2004. However, on January 10, 2018, Clarke passed away at the age of 67 due to pneumonia, leaving behind a legacy of influential music and unforgettable performances.
