Biography of Eddie Fisher

Eddie Fisher was an American showman, singer, and actor, known for his retro-style performances that harkened back to the singing style of Al Jolson. Born to immigrant parents from the Russian Empire, Fisher's mother's maiden name was Vinokur. He first gained fame in the late 1940s, performing in musical radio shows. In 1951, he was drafted into the army and served as the lead vocalist for the United States Armed Forces' musical ensemble, Pershing's Own. His strong and melodious tenor voice, combined with his winning looks, made him an idol for American teenagers in the early 1950s.

Fisher recorded his first single, "Thinking of You," in 1950. The following year, his record "Any Time" sold millions of copies. Presidents Harry Truman and Dwight Eisenhower named Fisher as their favorite performer. The peak of his success on the charts was in 1953, with his songs "Thinking of You" and "Oh! My Pa-Pa" becoming particularly famous.

However, his popularity waned due to a series of scandals. In addition to his music career, Fisher was known for his marriages to Hollywood stars Debbie Reynolds (1955-1959), Elizabeth Taylor (1959-1964), and Connie Stevens (1967-1969). Children from his first and third marriages became actors, with Carrie Fisher, who portrayed Princess Leia in the legendary "Star Wars" franchise, being the most well-known.

At the age of 47, Fisher married 21-year-old beauty queen Terry Richard, but their union ended after just 10 months. He married his fifth wife, Chinese businesswoman Betty Lin. Fisher was honored with two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, one for his singing career and another for his television hosting work. He also appeared in films such as "Bundle of Joy," "Butterfield 8," and "The Love Bug."

Eddie Fisher passed away in Berkeley, California, due to complications following hip surgery.
