Biography of Eddie McPyle
Eddie McPyle, born Addie Dukes in 1905 in White Plains, Kentucky, was an American actress who gained fame under her stage name. Growing up in a family that frequently moved due to her father's job as an insurance agent, Eddie attended several different schools. It was during her time in Madisonville that she first performed on stage in a children's church play, solidifying her decision to pursue a career in acting.
Early Career
In November 1925, when Eddie's family was living in California, she landed her first role in a low-budget comedy series produced by the Stern brothers. Although she appeared in several more series after that, Eddie never obtained leading roles and often went uncredited. During this period, she worked with studios such as Weiss Brothers and Universal. In the late 1920s, McPyle played minor roles in films directed by Gus Meins.
Success and Marriage
Over the course of her career, Eddie McPyle appeared in over 60 films. Her final film appearance was in 1941's "Cowboy and the Blonde," directed by Ray McCarey. In 1931, Eddie met the immensely popular actor Roscoe 'Fatty' Arbuckle, a silent film star of the 1920s. They married in June 1932 and lived together for two years until his death from a heart attack in June 1933.
Scandal and Retirement
During their time together, Eddie and Roscoe embarked on a nationwide tour, with plans for a grand return to the film industry. However, these plans were shattered due to a scandal from 1921 involving Arbuckle. Although he was ultimately acquitted of any wrongdoing in the death of a young woman at a party he hosted in San Francisco, his reputation suffered, and many companies refused to work with him. After Roscoe's death, Eddie remarried and changed her name to Eddie Sheldon.
Later Life
Eddie spent the remainder of her life working as a nurse in a nursing home in Canoga Park, where she passed away in 2003 at the age of 97. Despite the challenges she faced in her career and personal life, Eddie McPyle remains a notable figure in the history of American cinema.
