Early Life and Education

Jacques Hadamardwas a prominent French mathematician born in Versailles, France, on December 8, 1865. His early education took place at the Lycée Louis-le-Grand in Paris, where he excelled in mathematics.

Academic Career

École Normale Supérieure

In 1884, Hadamard entered the prestigious École Normale Supérieure, one of France's top higher education institutions. There, he came under the tutelage of renowned mathematician Henri Poincaré. In 1888, he graduated first in his class and was awarded the agrégation (teacher qualification) in mathematics.

Professor at Paris University

In 1897, Hadamard was appointed to the position of Professor at the Sorbonne (Paris University), where he taught for the next 47 years. He became a member of the French Academy of Sciences in 1919 and was elected President of the French Mathematical Society.

Mathematical Contributions

Differential Equations

Hadamard's research focused primarily on differential equations, specifically partial differential equations. He made significant contributions to the classification of second-order partial differential equations based on their characteristics. This classification is known as the Goursat classification.

Cauchy's Problem

Hadamard introduced the concept of "Goursat's problem" in the theory of partial differential equations. This problem involves solving a hyperbolic equation and a system of second-order equations with two independent variables by assigning values on two characteristic curves emerging from a single point.
