Biography of Édouard Lock
Édouard Lock, a choreographer of the 21st century, was born in Casablanca, Morocco. At the age of 21, he created his first choreographic composition for the group Nouvelle Air. This was followed by three more parts, which eventually merged into a single ballet and were performed in Montreal.
In 1980, Édouard Lock founded and became the artistic director of the dance company "La La La Human Steps". Shortly after the production of "Lili Marlene Dances in the Jungle", he began choreographing internationally. Lock was the first Canadian artist to be presented at the New York avant-garde theater "The Kitchen" in the 1980s. In 1981, he received the prestigious J. A. Chalmers Prize for his choreography "Oranges", his second work for his own company. In 1983, he created the production "The Businessman Transforming into an Angel".
The Ballet "Human Gender"
With the ballet "Human Gender" created in 1985, the company embarked on a two-year world tour and achieved tremendous success with audiences and critics everywhere, especially in New York. This work brought Édouard Lock onto the international stage and earned him the Bessie Award in 1986. Around the same time, Lock created "Bread Dance" for the Dutch National Ballet and "New Demons" for the opening of the second International Festival of New Dance in Montreal. The American magazine U.S. News and World Report named him one of the 10 artists who influenced American culture.
From 1991 to 1995, Lock composed "Infante c'est destroy". In 1996, he created "Études" for the National Ballet of Canada in Montreal. In 1999, the choreographer created "Coming to Terms" for the Dutch Dance Theater. In May 2001, Édouard Lock received the National J. A. Chalmers Prize for the second time. In June 2001, he was named a Knight of the National Order of Quebec. And in November of the same year, he was awarded the National Arts Center's prize for outstanding achievements in recent seasons.
In February 2002, he became an Officer of the Order of Canada, a recognition for his highest lifetime achievements. The Ministry of Culture of Quebec awarded him the Denise Pelletier Prize, the highest distinction in the performing arts existing in Quebec. In October 2002, Édouard Lock and "La La La Human Steps" presented the world premiere of "Amelia" at the State Opera in Prague. In November 2002, the Ballet of the Paris National Opera invited Édouard Lock to stage "AndreAuria".
