Early Life and Explorations

Norwegian seafarer and explorer, known for his daring expeditions in the Arctic. He embarked on several voyages to the Kara Sea, a marginal sea of the Arctic Ocean.

Exploration of Novaya Zemlya

In 1870 and 1871, he circumnavigated the large archipelago of Novaya Zemlya, located in the Arctic Ocean. His meticulous observations and detailed records of these expeditions contributed significantly to the understanding of the region's geography and natural environment.

Discovery of Ensomheden Island

In August 1878, the explorer achieved a notable milestone by discovering an island in the remote Arctic. Located northeast of the Yenisei River estuary, he named this uninhabited landmass Ensomheden (meaning "loneliness" in Norwegian), thus expanding the map of the Far North.
