Edward C. Dimock, Jr. was an eminent American Indologist who dedicated his life to the study of Bengali language and literature.
Early Life and Education
Born in Roslindale, Massachusetts in 1929, Dimock pursued his academic journey with distinction. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Yale University in 1950 and his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1959.
Academic Career at the University of Chicago
Dimock joined the University of Chicago in 1959 as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Linguistics and Oriental Languages. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a full Professor in 1966. Dimock was instrumental in establishing the Department of South Asian Languages and Civilizations at the University of Chicago.
Study of Bengali and Indian Languages
Recognized for his pioneering work in introducing Bengali and Bengali studies to American academia, Dimock traveled to India in 1955 and spent three years living in Calcutta with his family. His research was supported by the Rockefeller Foundation.
Contributions to Indological Research
Dimock's research focused on medieval Vaishnavism and Bengali literature. He translated the seminal Krishnaite text "Chaitanya-charitamrita" from Bengali to English in 1999. He also served as the Director of the American Institute of Indian Studies.
