Edward Joseph Dent was born in Ribston, Yorkshire, England, on 16 July 1876. He attended Eton College and later Cambridge University, where he graduated with honors in Classics.

Academic Career

In 1902, Dent was appointed Lecturer in Music at Cambridge University, where he taught for the next four decades. In 1926, he became Professor of Music, a position he held until his retirement in 1941.

Writing and Musical Criticism

Alongside his academic pursuits, Dent was a prolific writer and musical critic. He published several books on renowned composers, including Alessandro Scarlatti, George Frideric Handel, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Ferruccio Busoni. His most influential work, "Foundations of English Opera," explored the development of musical drama in England during the 18th century.

Leadership Roles in Music Organizations

Dent played a significant role in international musical organizations. From 1922 to 1938 and again from 1945 to 1947, he served as President of the International Society for Contemporary Music. He was also President of the International Musicological Society from 1931 to 1949.
