Edward Mulhare was born in 1923 in Cork City, County Cork, Ireland. Growing up in the Irish Christian Brothers, he initially planned to pursue a career in medicine. However, as he grew older, Mulhare developed a passion for the performing arts. He participated in several public performances, including productions at the Gate Theatre in Dublin. He later moved to London, where he worked with Orson Welles and John Gielgud. One of his most notable roles during this period was as Professor Higgins in the original Broadway production of "My Fair Lady" alongside Rex Harrison in 1957.
Mulhare made his television debut in 1956 in the film "The Adventures of Robin Hood." However, his fame came later with roles in series such as "The Ghost & Mrs. Muir" and "Knight Rider." He also made guest appearances on numerous television shows, including "What's My Line?" in 1958. In 1968, Mulhare received an Emmy Award nomination for his role in "The Ghost & Mrs. Muir," which was the only nomination he received in his acting career.
Mulhare appeared in several feature films, including the action film "Our Man Flint" (1966) directed by Daniel Mann, the detective film "Eye of the Devil" (1966) directed by J. Lee Thompson, and the comedy "Caprice" (1967) directed by Frank Tashlin.
In 1982, Mulhare portrayed his most famous character, Devon Miles, in "Knight Rider," alongside David Hasselhoff, who also gained fame from the show. Interestingly, Mulhare also played his last television role in 1997, alongside Hasselhoff, in the series "Baywatch Nights." In the same year, he appeared in his final film, the comedy "Out to Sea" directed by Martha Coolidge.
Mulhare's filmography includes around 50 productions, with the majority being television series. He passed away from lung cancer on May 24, 1997, in Los Angeles. It is known that he was never married.
