An Early Life in Ukraine

Efraim Katzir, Israel's fourth president, was born in Kiev in 1916 with the surname Kachalsky. At the tender age of nine, he and his family emigrated from Ukraine to Jerusalem, where he has resided to this day.

A Pioneering Scientist

Katzir was instrumental in the establishment of the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot. He founded the scientific journal "Mada," organized and directed the scientific branch of the Israel Defense Forces, and authored seminal works on the biochemistry of enzymes.

A Lifetime of Academic Endeavors

Following his retirement from the presidency in 1978, Katzir established and headed the Department of Biotechnology at Tel Aviv University, demonstrating his enduring commitment to scholarship.

A Presidency Amidst Historical Turmoil

Katzir's presidency (1973-1978) coincided with several momentous events, including the Yom Kippur War, the rise of the right wing to power, and the historic visit of Egyptian President Anwar Sadat to Jerusalem.
