Biography of Ekaterina Gabashvili

Ekaterina Gabashvili was a Georgian writer and social activist. She was born on June 16 (28), 1851, in the city of Gori, Georgia, into a noble family. Gabashvili started publishing her works in 1870. Her writings depicted the harsh life of peasants, the social contradictions in Georgian villages (such as the stories "A Novel in Didikhevi" in 1881, "Kona" in 1881, and "Orena and Kuche" in 1883), the struggles of rural intellectuals (novels like "The Village Teacher" and "Gamardzhebuli Niko"), the difficult fate of women in the face of social inequality ("Different Weddings" in 1881, "Unveiled" in 1912), and the decline of the Georgian feudal aristocracy ("Benouar No. 3" in 1898). She also wrote stories for children, including "Sivko Magdany," "The Mshieradze Family," and others. Towards the end of her life, Gabashvili published memoirs. She passed away on August 7, 1938, in Tbilisi.
