Elaine Paige, born as Elaine Bickerstaff on March 5, 1948, in Barnet, Hertfordshire, is a British singer, mezzo-soprano, and the First Lady of British Musical Theatre. She began her career as a dancer and participated in numerous school theatrical productions. Paige attended drama courses at Aida Foster's School of Drama and received professional training. She made her debut in the show "The Roar Of The Greasepaint, The Smell Of The Crowd" in 1964. Paige then appeared in several musicals such as "Roar Like A Dove," "Maybe That's Your Problem," and "Rock Carmen."

Her conquest of the West End began with ensemble roles in the musical "Hair" and the rock opera "Jesus Christ Superstar" in 1973. In 1974, she landed her first major role as Sandy in the show "Grease" and later played Rita in the original production of "Billy" for eighteen months. It was during this time that she partnered with Michael Crawford, who later gained worldwide fame as the Phantom in "The Phantom of the Opera."

In 1978, Paige was offered the role of Eva Perón in Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's musical "Evita." Despite initially declining the role, she eventually auditioned and won the part.
