Tennis Career

Elena started playing tennis at a young age and made her debut in ITF junior matches in February 1997. Although she never won a junior championship, she showcased her talent by defeating future tennis stars such as Svetlana Kuznetsova, Gisela Dulko, and Anne Keothavong. In 2001, Elena began competing in professional tournaments and reached several quarterfinals and one semifinal. She also qualified for her first Grand Slam tournament that year. By the end of the season, she ranked 248th in the world.

The following year, Elena's performance improved significantly, winning two consecutive $25,000 ITF tournaments. This, along with her other matches throughout the year, propelled her to the 157th position in the rankings. However, her progress was hindered by health issues in 2003, as she missed many matches due to her liver problems. As a result, her ranking dropped to 373rd.

In 2004 and 2005, Elena fought hard and managed to climb back into the top 200, reaching the 122nd position. Unfortunately, in 2006, she faced another setback when she developed a herniated disc, requiring surgery and a lengthy recovery period. This series of missed matches caused her ranking to plummet to 347th. Elena made her comeback in March 2007, and by the end of that year, she had risen to the 187th position.

Elena's remarkable rise in the rankings was partly attributed to her performance at Wimbledon, where she reached the first round. By the end of 2008, she was ranked 136th, and by the end of 2009, she had climbed to 87th. Despite battling health issues again towards the end of 2010, Elena managed to rise to the 54th position in the rankings. At the time of her passing, she was ranked 60th.

Final Years and Passing

Tragically, Elena Baltacha was diagnosed with liver cancer in March 2014. On May 4, 2014, she passed away, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most talented and resilient tennis players of her generation.
