Biography of Elena Gheorghe
Elena Gheorghe is a Romanian singer who represented Romania at the Eurovision Song Contest in Moscow in 2009. She began her singing career at the age of 11 when she enrolled in the "Children's National Palace" where she took singing lessons. In the year 2000, she won the golden trophy at the "Little Bear" competition in Baia Mare with her rendition of Whitney Houston's "One moment in time". In 2001, Elena participated in the Mamaia Festival with her song "Dau viata mea".
Family Background
Elena Gheorghe has Romanian and Aromanian roots. Many of her ancestors were priests, including her father. Her mother, Marioara Man Gheorghe, is a folk music performer. Elena's first performance took place in 1988 when she sang in a duo with her mother. She also has a sister named Ana, who is a journalist, and a brother named Costin, who is a football player for the team "Sportul".
Early Career and Eurovision
Elena started singing with the group "Mandinga" in early 2003. In June of the same year, the group released their first album, "...de corazón". In 2005, Mandinga finished fourth in the Romanian selection for Eurovision with their song "My Sun", which later achieved gold status. In January 2006, Elena opened her own dance school called "Passitos" and ended her collaboration with Mandinga. In June 2006, she released her first solo album, "Vocea Ta". In August 2007, Elena received an award for the best song, "Ochii tai caprui".
In January 2009, Elena was selected to represent Romania at Eurovision 2009 with her song "The Balkan Girls". In the final of the contest on May 16, Elena received forty points and finished nineteenth.
