Eliahu Inbal, an esteemed Israeli conductor, has left an indelible mark on the world of classical music. His exceptional talent and dedication have cemented his status as a true maestro.

Early Life and Training

Born in Jerusalem, Inbal initially pursued violin at the Israel Academy of Music. Under the guidance of renowned composer Paul Ben-Haim, he also delved into composition. Following a recommendation from Leonard Bernstein, Inbal furthered his studies at the prestigious Conservatoire de Paris, honing his abilities under the tutelage of maestros Sergiu Celibidache and Franco Ferrara.

Debut and International Acclaim

Inbal made his conducting debut in Italian orchestras. His breakthrough came in 1965 with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. This triumph led to a series of engagements in the UK, prompting him to acquire British citizenship.

Tenures and Notable Recordings

From 1974 to 1990, Inbal led the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra. With this ensemble, he recorded the complete Mahler symphonies and performed several Bruckner symphonies in their original versions.

Simultaneously, Inbal served as Music Director of Teatro La Fenice in Venice from 1984 to 1989. He returned in 2007 as Artistic Director. From 1995 to 2001, he headed the Turin-based Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI, leading the production of Wagner's operatic tetralogy "Der Ring des Nibelungen."

Inbal also directed the Berlin Symphony Orchestra from 2001 to 2006. Since 2008, he has been the Chief Conductor of the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra.

Significant Collaborations

In addition to his extensive orchestral work, Inbal has collaborated with world-renowned ensembles. Notably, he recorded all of Shostakovich's symphonies with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. He has also conducted Bartok and Richard Strauss with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande.

Later Career Highlights

In 2009, Inbal became the Chief Conductor of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, where he has garnered critical acclaim for his interpretations and musicality.
