Biography of Elijah Wood
Elijah Jordan Wood was born on January 28, 1981, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, USA. His talents first began to emerge when he started school, particularly in the field of music. At the age of 7, he was already participating in local choir performances, and a year later, Elijah took part in a theatrical production of "The Wizard of Oz" at the "Hooray for Hollywood" festival. It was during a television commercial viewing that Elijah's parents had the idea that their son could also succeed in acting, just like his peers. In 1988, Elijah's mother enrolled him in their local modeling agency, Avant Studios, and six months later, he was sent to the International Models and Young Talent Association conference in Los Angeles. This was the first time Elijah had left his home state of Iowa. One of the jury members, Gary Scalzo, admitted that he was initially reluctant to participate in the event: "There were over 200 children from around the world and another 300 people under the age of 30 who also wanted to try their luck. Many of my colleagues asked me if I had seen Elijah, and it piqued my interest. As a result, I spent the whole day with my mouth open, watching him and unable to hide my admiration for his vibrant energy and talent. The only concern I had was whether we could channel all that energy into the right direction."
Other jury members recall that when Elijah first stepped on stage, silence fell in the room: "He completely controlled the audience from the moment of his first appearance. His natural charm, smile, and charisma instantly won over the hearts of the spectators." When Gary Scalzo first saw Elijah at the talent festival, the boy was only 8 years old. His talent was evident, and within a few days after the event, Wood and his mother were invited to the agency to discuss his acting career.
Elijah himself recalls that he had never even considered becoming an actor when he was first sent to the talent festival - he was interested in a modeling career at the time. However, when Scalzo read a few monologues with him and asked if he wanted to be an actor, Elijah replied without hesitation, "Of course. I will be an actor." A month later, the Wood family moved to Los Angeles, where Elijah's acting career began under the guidance of Gary Scalzo.
After 6 weeks of auditions and casting, Elijah got his first job - a role in Paula Abdul's music video "Forever Your Girl." This was followed by small roles in films such as "Back to the Future Part II" (1989) and "Internal Affairs." However, film critics only noticed his young talent after the release of Barry Levinson's film "Avalon" in 1990, which was nominated for an Oscar in several categories. Elijah played his first leading role in the film "Paradise" as a boy trying to bring together the characters played by Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith. In 1992, he starred alongside Mel Gibson in the film "Forever Young."
In 1993, Wood was paired with another young talent, Macaulay Culkin, in the film "The Good Son," which failed at the box office and received negative reviews from viewers who couldn't accept the "Home Alone" star as a young psychopath. In the same year, Elijah played Huckleberry Finn in the film of the same name and also appeared in "The War" with Kevin Costner. In 1994, the actor played the lead role in "North," a film that received a large number of negative reviews, but almost all of them contained praise for the young talent. Not even the presence of a star like Bruce Willis in a big white rabbit costume with a carrot in his mouth could save the film, although personally, it at least made me smile. The film "Flipper," released in 1996, was not much better, but fortunately, the critically acclaimed "The Ice Storm" by Ang Lee brought a positive shift in Wood's career.
The films with Elijah released in 1998, "Deep Impact" and "The Faculty" by Rodriguez, while not considered high art by critics, enjoyed consistent popularity among the audience and performed well at the global box office. It was after this that Elijah began to be recognized by ordinary viewers, both in the United States and beyond.
The films released in the period from 1999 to 2000 went largely unnoticed, especially compared to Elijah's last role - the role of Frodo in the long-awaited adaptation of "The Lord of the Rings." Regardless of how this film epic was received by fans of Tolkien's work and ordinary viewers, almost everyone who watched the film agreed on one thing - the young talent chosen for the lead role performed it with 100% dedication, and it is now hard to imagine anyone else as Frodo.
