Early Life and Education

Kathryn Hire was born on May 10, 1958, in Los Angeles, California. She graduated from Crossmont High School in 1975 and went on to pursue higher education. In 1980, she earned a Bachelor of Science in Physics from the University of San Diego. She then received her Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University in 1981 and her Doctorate in Electrical Engineering from the same institution in 1985.

Career before NASA

Prior to joining NASA, Kathryn Hire worked at Sandia National Laboratories and NASA's Ames Research Center from 1985 to 1991. She specialized in developing optical systems for communications applications.

NASA Career

Astronaut Selection:

Kathryn Hire was selected to join the NASA astronaut corps in January 1990.

Space Missions:

She embarked on three space missions:

- STS-56 (1993): Specialist on the Space Shuttle Discovery, 9 days 6 hours 8 minutes

- STS-66 (1994): Specialist on the Space Shuttle Atlantis, 10 days 22 hours 34 minutes
