Biography of Emanuel Steward

Emanuel Steward was born on July 7th in Bottom Creek, West Virginia. From a young age, he began training in boxing and showed great talent. At the age of 12, Steward moved to Detroit with his mother after his parents' divorce. He started training at the famous Brewster Recreation Center, known for honing the skills of boxing legends such as Joe Louis and Eddie Futch.

Steward had an impressive amateur boxing career, winning 95 out of 98 fights. One of the highlights of his career was winning the Golden Gloves tournament in the flyweight division. After his success as a boxer, Steward transitioned to coaching and began working with young fighters. He also worked as an electrician to supplement his income as a coach, as it was not always financially stable.

In 1971, Steward joined the famous Kronk Gym in Detroit, which gained recognition thanks to his coaching. The gym produced some of the best young boxers in the United States, and Steward became one of the most sought-after trainers of the 1970s.

In 1980, Steward's first professional student, Hilmer Kenty, became a world champion in the lightweight division after knocking out Ernesto Espana. Another one of Steward's star students, Thomas Hearns, went on to become a five-time world champion in different weight classes and earned a reputation as one of the best punchers in boxing history. Steward's coaching skills were also recognized in the 1984 Olympics, where his students won six gold medals in boxing.

Steward's reputation as a top boxing coach grew, and he trained many renowned boxers, including Michael Moorer, Evander Holyfield, Julio Cesar Chavez, Lennox Lewis, Oscar De La Hoya, and many others. Currently, Steward is working with Ukrainian boxer Vladimir Klitschko, whom he considers the strongest heavyweight in the world. He also plans to work with Russian super heavyweight Olympic champion Alexander Povetkin.

In addition to his coaching career, Steward is a commentator for HBO, one of the most popular American television channels for professional boxing matches. In 1980, he was named "Manager of the Year" by the Association of American Boxing Writers and was later inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1997 for his contributions to the sport.
