Emílson Cribari: A Brazilian Defender in Italian Football
Early Career and EmpoliEmílson Cribari embarked on his footballing journey with Londrina's youth team. At the age of 18, he crossed the Atlantic to join Empoli in Italy, following in the footsteps of his older brother, Binho. Cribari spent six seasons with Empoli, accumulating 103 appearances and scoring three goals. He made his Serie A debut on September 14, 2002, in a match against Como.
Udinese and Lazio
In the summer of 2004, Cribari moved to Udinese, but his time there was marred by a severe knee injury that limited him to only eight appearances. A loan move to Lazio in 2005 proved to be a turning point. After an impressive season, Lazio exercised their option to sign him permanently for €3.5 million.
Under the iconic Rome skyline, Cribari played a pivotal role in Lazio's third-place finish in Serie A, earning them a spot in the UEFA Champions League. However, tragedy struck in the competition's qualifying rounds. During a match against Bucharest's Dinamo, Cribari suffered a fractured jaw and cheekbone, sidelining him for over two months. Remarkably, a mere two weeks after his injury, he donned a protective mask to participate in the return leg.
Contract Extension and Moscow's Interest
At the end of that season, Cribari extended his contract with Lazio until 2011. However, during the 2008/2009 campaign, he found himself gradually slipping out of the starting lineup. In March 2009, he voiced his concerns about a lack of trust, leading to his decision to leave the club at the end of the season.
Siena and Return to Lazio
On January 4, 2010, Cribari joined Siena on loan with an option to make the move permanent. In his Siena debut, he was sent off for insulting a referee, resulting in a one-match suspension. After 18 appearances for the club, he returned to Lazio in the summer.
Naples Odyssey
With Lazio eager to sell, Cribari attracted interest from several Serie A clubs. On August 31, 2010, he signed a one-year contract with Napoli, with an option for an additional year.
