An American Mom Swaps SUV for a Family-Sized Bicycle
Emily Finch, a resourceful 34-year-old mother of six from Portland, Oregon, has ditched her car keys and now cycles her children to school on a modified bicycle.
The Wonder Bike
Finch's bicycle is a custom-made cargo bike inspired by traditional Dutch bakfiets. It features a sturdy frame with extra wheels and a spacious front basket to accommodate her children. Despite its substantial weight, Finch effortlessly pedals her bike through city traffic, carrying up to 550 pounds of passengers and groceries.
A Cost-Effective Investment
Finch believes her cargo bike is a sound investment. "It's funny how so many people ask me how much it costs," she says. "If someone drives a $4,000 car, nobody asks, 'Oh my gosh, how much is that?' This is an investment that will pay for itself over time. It's awesome."
The Catalyst for Change
Finch's transition to cycling was spurred by a desire to simplify her life. "I started observing my life, and I lived in this huge house and had this nine-passenger van. I remember thinking, 'There's no reason I shouldn't be able to walk or bike around this city.'"
Embracing the Bike
Finch was drawn to the cargo bike in 2009 when her husband, a neurologist, suggested it as an alternative to an SUV. "It was a time in my life when I knew I wanted to change things," Finch recalls. "When I saw that bike, it clicked. I said, 'That's it. That's gonna change my life.'"
City Curiosity
Finch's unconventional ride raised eyebrows among fellow Portlanders. "People thought I was going to join a cult or something," she says. "People would ask me, 'Is that a boat on wheels? Are you gonna put your kids on that?'"
Overcoming Challenges
Despite the initial skepticism, Finch persevered. "At first, it totally killed me," she recalls. "I didn't think I was going to be able to ride it. It was really exhausting... But I just kept riding it; I got used to it, and now I can handle it by myself."
A Cycling Family
Cycling has transformed Finch's family. The absence of a soundproof car interior fosters open communication and cooperation among the children. Finch also enjoys the health benefits of cycling and has lost about 30 pounds since switching to two wheels.
