Emily V. Gordon is an acclaimed American writer, comedian, and producer. Her remarkable career spans family therapy, comedy writing, and television production, culminating in an Academy Award nomination for her co-written screenplay, "The Big Sick."

Early Life and Education

Gordon was born and raised in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She earned a Bachelor's degree in Psychology from East Carolina University and a Master's/Education degree in Couples and Family Counseling from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Counseling Career

From 2004 to 2009, Gordon worked as a practicing therapist in North Carolina, Chicago, Illinois, and Brooklyn, New York.

Comedy and Writing

Gordon transitioned to comedy in New York City, where she performed at the Comix comedy club and produced a live show with Pete Holmes. By the time she moved to Los Angeles in 2010, writing comedy and freelance writing had become her full-time pursuits.

Gordon has penned two web series for Disney.com: "Power Up" and "ExploreD." She contributed a script for the second season of NBC's "The Carmichael Show."

The Meltdown and Nerdist

In 2010, Gordon co-created and produced the live weekly show "The Meltdown with Jonah and Kumail," featuring Jonah Ray and Kumail Nanjiani. From 2011 to 2012, she served as the Programming Director for Nerdist's exhibition space at Meltdown Comics.

Podcasting

Gordon and Nanjiani co-hosted the popular podcast "The Indoor Kids" from 2011 to 2015. In 2020, they launched another podcast, "Staying In with Emily and Kumail," about the COVID-19 quarantine.

"Super You"

Gordon's first book, "Super You: Release Your Inner Superhero," a satirical self-help guide, was published in 2015.

"The Big Sick"

In 2017, Gordon co-wrote and co-executive produced the critically acclaimed film "The Big Sick" with her husband, Kumail Nanjiani. The film, based on their early relationship, features Nanjiani as himself and Gordon as Emily Gardner (played by Zoe Kazan). "The Big Sick" was directed by Michael Showalter and produced by Judd Apatow.

Gordon and Nanjiani's screenplay won the Independent Spirit Award for Best First Screenplay. It also earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay in 2018, along with numerous accolades from writers' guilds and critics associations.

Personal Life

Gordon has been married to actor and comedian Kumail Nanjiani since 2007. It is her second marriage. They met at a comedy show in Chicago where Nanjiani was performing. The encounter was later immortalized in "The Big Sick." They began dating shortly after, but their relationship was put on hold when Gordon became seriously ill and fell into a medically induced coma. She was eventually diagnosed with Still's disease. She recovered within three months, and they married a year after their initial meeting. They have lived in Chicago, New York City, and Los Angeles.
