Emmy Noether, an extraordinary German mathematician, is widely regarded as the most eminent woman mathematician who ever lived. She was born into a family of mathematicians in Erlangen, Germany. Her father, Max Noether, was a professor at the University of Erlangen, where Emmy initially studied as a guest student. In 1904, she officially enrolled after the university allowed women to attend lectures.

Early Career and Contributions

Noether studied under renowned mathematician Paul Gordan and completed her dissertation on invariant theory in 1907. In 1915, she made significant contributions to the development of general relativity. Albert Einstein, in a letter to David Hilbert, expressed admiration for Noether's "penetrating mathematical thinking."

In 1916, Noether moved to Göttingen, Germany, where she collaborated with David Hilbert and Felix Klein on their research in relativity. Her expertise in invariant theory proved invaluable. Hilbert became a major influence on Noether, fostering her interest in the axiomatic method.

Obstacles and Achievements

Despite Hilbert's support, Noether faced prejudice from the university's faculty, who refused to grant her a full professorship due to her gender. With the rise of the Nazis in 1933, Noether, being Jewish, was forced to emigrate to the United States. She accepted a teaching position at Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania and became a visiting professor at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton.
