Go-Sakuramachi: Japan's 117th Empress

Birth and Early Life

Go-Sakuramachi was born on September 23, 1740, as Princess Toshiko, the second daughter of Emperor Sakuramachi and consorts Nijō Ieoka and Nijō Yoshimoto. She held the title of Princess Isa, later changed to Princess Ake.

Ascension to the Throne

In 1762, Emperor Momozono, Go-Sakuramachi's younger brother, passed away, leaving his young son, Hidehito, as the heir apparent. However, Hidehito was too young to assume the throne. As per the late emperor's will, Go-Sakuramachi became the new monarch on September 15, 1762, under the reign name Go-Sakuramachi. She was the last female to hold the Japanese imperial throne.

Reign and Abdication

Go-Sakuramachi ruled until December 1769, when she abdicated in favor of Hidehito, who became Emperor Go-Momozono. She assumed the title of Daijo Tenno.

Post-Reign and Later Life

After her abdication, Go-Sakuramachi dedicated herself to poetry, Japanese literature, and history. She left behind 41 volumes of her diary and a collection of poems and prose titled "Annual Palace Events."

Death and Legacy

Go-Sakuramachi died on December 24, 1813, at the age of 74. She is buried in the Tsukinova tomb at Senryu-ji Temple in Kyoto's Higashiyama district.
