Biography of Enrico Betti
Enrico Betti was an illustrious Italian mathematician and physicist renowned for his groundbreaking contributions to topology. Born in Pistoia, Tuscany, he was orphaned at a young age.
Education and Early Career
In 1846, Betti graduated from the University of Pisa. Subsequently, he participated in the armed struggle for Italian unification. After the war, he became a lecturer at the University of Pisa.
Academic Advancements
Throughout his career, Betti held various academic positions at the University of Pisa. In 1857, he assumed the professorship of higher algebra, later moving to chairs in analysis and higher geometry. In 1864, he became Professor of Mathematical Physics, and in 1870, Professor of Celestial Mechanics. Betti also served as Director of the Pisa Normal School, transforming it into Italy's premier academic institution. Notable 19th-century Italian mathematicians attended his lectures.
Mathematical Contributions
Betti initially concentrated his research on algebra, mathematical analysis, and function theory. His encounter with Bernhard Riemann during a European tour in 1858 ignited his passion for multidimensional geometry and mathematical physics.
In 1871, Betti published "On Spaces of an Arbitrary Number of Dimensions," introducing the concept later named "Betti numbers." This concept, refined by Henri Poincaré, became a cornerstone of topology. Betti also made significant contributions to the theory of connectivity of surfaces, potential theory, and physics. Notably, he discovered an important theorem in the theory of elasticity.
Political Involvement
From 1862 onwards, Betti served as a member of the Italian Parliament. He later became a Senator in 1884.
