Biography of Enrique Bernat

Enrique Bernat was born on October 20, 1923, in Barcelona. He began his career working in his parents' confectionery store. Bernat was the grandson of a prominent businessman who founded the confectionery company "Granha Asturias". After some time, Enrique obtained the rights to manage his grandfather's company. Within a few years, the enterprise started to flourish.

It was at this moment that Enrique Bernat made an unexpected and fateful decision: he discontinued the production of two hundred types of products manufactured by the company and started to produce only one - lollipops. This decision was preceded by extensive research. With the help of specialists, Enrique discovered that no one had ever produced candy specifically designed for children. The main difference in Bernat's candy was the stick on which the candy was placed. It could be sucked without getting hands and clothes dirty. Initially, the stick was made of wood, but later it was made of plastic. Enrique named his candy "Chupa Chups", and at first, it had only seven flavors: strawberry, lemon, mint, orange, chocolate, coffee with cream, and strawberry with cream. The popularity of the candy grew, and with it, the quantity of produced candies increased, and new flavors were introduced.

Now, the entrepreneur faced another challenge - he needed to come up with an original wrapper that would make "Chupa Chups" recognizable to everyone. In 1961, Enrique Bernat turned to his fellow countryman, the famous artist Salvador Dali. The brilliant artist didn't need much time to think and sketched a picture for him in less than an hour. The drawing depicted a daisy "Chupa Chups", which is now recognized as the logo of "Chupa Chups" all over the world. The logo is located not on the side but on top of the candy.

In 1991, Enrique passed formal control over Chupa Chups to his son, Javier. On December 27, 2003, Enrique Bernat passed away.

Today, at the beginning of the 21st century, the sales volume of "Chupa Chups" exceeded 400 million dollars. And it all started half a century ago in distant Barcelona with a simple candy on a wooden stick invented by Enrique Bernat. The only difference between Chupa Chups and our traditional candy roosters is the wrapper.
