Eric Gerets
BelgiumEarly Career
Eric Gerets was born in Rekem, Belgium, and began his football career with local club RFC Rekem. His talent was quickly recognized, and he joined Standard Liege at the age of 19. Gerets played for Standard for three seasons before moving to Italian giants AC Milan in 1979.
International Success
Gerets made his debut for the Belgian national team in 1975 and went on to become the country's second-most capped player with 86 appearances. He was part of the Belgian squad that finished second in the 1980 European Championship.
Club Coaching Career
After retiring as a player, Gerets embarked on a successful coaching career. He managed several Belgian clubs, including Liege, Lierse, and Club Brugge, before taking on the reins of Dutch club PSV Eindhoven in 1995. With PSV, Gerets won the Eredivisie title in the 1996-97 season.
International Success as a Coach
In 2006, Gerets led Galatasaray to the Turkish Super Lig championship. He also guided the Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal to victory in the Asian Champions League in 2009.
