Early Life and Family
Erik Lobron was born on May 7, 1960, in Germantown, Pennsylvania. At the age of five, he moved with his family to Germany and grew up in Wiesbaden.
Chess Career
Junior SuccessLobron's chess prowess emerged at an early age. In 1978, he claimed the German Youth Chess Championship title.
International Master and German Champion
In 1980, Lobron triumphed at the German Chess Championship in Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler, earning him the International Master title from FIDE. He subsequently abandoned his studies to focus on international chess tournaments.
Grandmaster Recognition and Victories
Lobron's breakthrough came in 1982 when he defeated Lev Polugaevsky in both Ramat HaSharon and Manila. This achievement paved the way for his recognition as a Grandmaster. He continued to accumulate team and individual victories, including triumphs in New York (1983), Biel (1986), Brussels (1987), and Ter Apel (1987).
Peak of Career
Lobron remained a formidable force in the chess world. In 1984, he emerged as the sole winner of the Open Chess Championship. He defended his German Championship title and achieved notable results in the PCA qualifying tournament in Groningen (1993).
Team Competitions
Lobron represented Germany in the European Team Chess Championships three times: 1983, 1989, and 1992.
Personal Life and Other Interests
In 2004, Lobron began a romantic relationship with Carmen Kass, a supermodel and the President of the Estonian Chess Federation. He is also a proficient backgammon player.
