German Diplomat and Professor
Dr. Hans Georg von Mackensen was a prominent German diplomat and professor.
Early Career
Von Mackensen joined the German Foreign Ministry in 1928. In 1935, he accompanied Foreign Minister Joachim von Ribbentrop to London for the signing of the Anglo-German Naval Agreement.
Nazi Affiliation
In 1937, von Mackensen became a member of the Nazi Party and was promoted to SS-Sturmbannführer in 1939.
Involvement in Resistance
Despite his Nazi affiliation, von Mackensen participated in the "Oster Plan" in 1938, which aimed to assassinate Hitler if he launched a war with Czechoslovakia over the Sudetenland.
Post-War Career
After the war, von Mackensen settled in West Germany. Due to his connections to the Resistance, he was rehabilitated during the denazification process.
Diplomatic and Academic Achievements
From 1951 onwards, von Mackensen served as a lecturer in the Diplomatic Corps of West Germany. He became a professor of international law at the University of Cologne and head of a department in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He also chaired the East-West Relations Commission.
Author and Legacy
Von Mackensen authored the book "Illusion and Reality" ("Wahn und Wirklichkeit"), published in Stuttgart in 1947. His brother, Theodor, also worked in the German Foreign Ministry.
