Early Life and Education

Erich Amburgerwas born on Vasilievsky Island in St. Petersburg, Russia, on December 8, 1914. He was the son of Nikolai-Alexander Amburger, a doctor, and Herta Amburger (née Schlottländer).

In 1920, the Amburger family fled Russia through Reval (now Tallinn) and settled in Germany. Erich studied history at the University of Heidelberg and the University of Berlin.

Academic Career

Historian of Germany and Russia

Amburger specialized in the history of Germany and Russia, with a particular focus on Russia's German population. He authored several monographs, including:

Amburger compiled a vast card catalog of biographical information on foreigners who lived and worked in Russia. He bequeathed this collection to the Osteuropa-Institut in Regensburg, Germany, where it is currently being digitized.
