In 2017, Andy Cruz, a promising young Cuban boxer, emerged as a force to be reckoned with. He claimed the silver medal in the light flyweight division (56 kg) at the Cuban National Youth Championships. The following year, he showcased his versatility by winning the Cuban National Youth Championship in the lightweight category (60 kg).

Cruz made his mark on the senior circuit at the 2019 Cuban National Championships. Despite competing in the welterweight division (63 kg), he faced a disappointing loss in the round of sixteen. Returning with determination, Cruz dominated the 2022 Cuban National Championships, securing the gold medal in the welterweight division.

Cruz's international breakthrough came at the 2023 World Championships, where he exhibited his exceptional skills in the lightweight category (60 kg). From the round of sixteen to the semifinals, he defeated opponents from Indonesia, the Dominican Republic, Zambia, and Jordan. In a thrilling final, he ultimately fell short to France's Sofiane Oumiha, earning the silver medal.
At the 2023 Central American and Caribbean Games, Cruz competed in the welterweight division (63.5 kg). He displayed his dominance once again, securing the silver medal after a hard-fought final against Dominican Republic's Alexis de la Cruz.
