Ernest Borgnine, a talented American actor and recipient of the prestigious Academy Award for Best Actor in the 1950s, was born on January 24, 1917, in Connecticut. His birth name was Hermes Effron Borgnino. His parents were Italian immigrants who settled in the United States. When Ernest was two years old, his parents separated, and he and his mother returned to Italy for a period of time. After living there for five years, they returned to Connecticut, where Ernest attended public school.

Upon completing school, Ernest enlisted in the United States Navy and served from 1935 to 1941. Although he was released from military obligations, the outbreak of World War II forced Borgnine to continue his service.
