Cardinal Ernesto Corripio y Ahumada
Early Life and Ecclesiastical CareerErnesto Corripio y Ahumada was born in Tampico, Mexico, on June 29, 1919. He received his ecclesiastical training at the Pontifical Seminary of Tampico and the Pontifical University of Mexico.
Episcopal and Archiepiscopal Appointments
On December 27, 1952, Corripio was ordained a titular bishop of Zama and auxiliary bishop of Tampico. He became Bishop of Tampico on February 25, 1956.
In 1967, Corripio was appointed Archbishop of Antequera and served as President of the Mexican Episcopal Conference from 1967 to 1973. He was later appointed Archbishop of Puebla de Los Angeles (1976-1977) and Archbishop of Mexico City (1977-1994).
Cardinalate
On June 30, 1979, Corripio was elevated to the College of Cardinals by Pope John Paul II, with the title of Cardinal-Priest of Immacolata al Tiburtino.
Leadership in the Mexican Church
Cardinal Corripio was a prominent figure in the Mexican Catholic Church. As Archbishop of Mexico City, he led the Archdiocese through a period of significant growth and transformation. He was a strong advocate for social justice and human rights, and played a key role in organizing the first World Youth Day in 1984.
Legacy
Cardinal Corripio y Ahumada retired from his post in 1994 and passed away on September 29, 2008. He is remembered as a compassionate pastor, a dedicated advocate for the poor and marginalized, and a tireless promoter of Christian values in Mexico and beyond.
