Early Life
Eryn Howie was born in May 2011 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England. From the moment she was born, the Howie family faced constant worry and fear for her fragile life. Despite the doctors giving only a 50/50 chance of survival, her parents, 38-year-old Dawn and 40-year-old Mark, remained hopeful and determined to do everything they could to help their unborn daughter survive. They already had three sons who eagerly awaited the arrival of their baby sister.
Health Struggles
As soon as Erin was born, she was immediately admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary. It was a terrifying time for the Howie family, and Dawn recalls that she never had a moment of peace from worrying about Erin. The newborn girl required surgery, and the family endured an agonizing wait filled with tears and suffering. Photos from those days are heart-wrenching, showing the tiny baby hooked up to tubes, catheters, and other medical devices. It felt as though only a miracle or a successful organ transplant could save her.
Organ Transplant
When Erin reached the age of two, it was time to seriously consider a kidney transplant. Dawn made the selfless decision to become her daughter's donor. She turned out to be a perfect match, and the operation was scheduled without delay. Erin successfully underwent the transplant surgery, and both she and her mother recovered well. Soon enough, the active and lively girl was playing with her brothers at home.
Life After
Looking at Erin, Dawn and Mark cannot forget the terrifying time when their daughter's life hung in the balance. Dawn emphasizes that she did not see her decision as a sacrifice but rather as her duty. Since she gave Erin life, it was her responsibility to protect her. Erin continues to thrive and bring joy to her family, reminding them daily of the miracle they have been given.
