Early Life and EducationEudenice Palaruan was born on July 3, 1968, in Solano, Nueva Vizcaya, but grew up in his father's hometown of Lamut, Ifugao. His musical journey began at the Philippine High School for the Arts, where he specialized in vocal and piano performance. Later, at the University of the Philippines College of Music, he studied composition and conducting under Reynaldo Paguio and Joel Navarro, earning his bachelor's degree in choral conducting. From 1994 to 1997, Palaruan continued his education at the Berliner Kirchenmusikschule in Germany, under the tutelage of Professor Martin Behrmann.
Career Highlights
Palaruan's career took off at a young age. As a teenager, he joined the Philippine Madrigal Singers, becoming their choirmaster later on. He also worked with the Ateneo College Glee Club as assistant conductor and music director from 1991 to 1994. Throughout the 1990s, Palaruan taught at Santa Isabel College and served as part of the faculty at the Asian Institute of Liturgy and Music.
In 1992, he joined the World Youth Choir, which performed at the Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. While studying in Germany, Palaruan led the Spandau Baptist Church Choir from 1995 to 1998. Upon returning to the Philippines, he directed the Chancel Choir of the Greenhills Christian Fellowship from 1999 to 2004.
San Miguel Master Chorale and International Recognition
In 2004, Palaruan became the principal conductor of the San Miguel Master Chorale, the first professional choir in the Philippines. Under his guidance, the choir performed at the 7th World Symposium on Choral Music in Kyoto, Japan, in 2005. It was during this critically acclaimed performance that Palaruan's own works, "Gapas" and "Infaag" from the "Pundayaw" cycle, were premiered.
Legacy and Recognition
Today, Palaruan is a highly respected figure in Philippine classical music. He teaches at the University of the Philippines College of Music and St. Paul University Manila, while serving as music director for the Union Church of Manila. As a conductor, he has worked with some of the finest Filipino ensembles, and his compositions and arrangements are highly regarded. Palaruan's dedication to the promotion of choral music and his significant contributions to the Philippine musical landscape have earned him widespread recognition and admiration.
