Eugenia Kim: A Biography of a Talented Fashion Designer
Born in Pennsylvania, Eugenia Kim is an American fashion designer of Korean descent, best known for her line of fashionable hats. Growing up, Kim excelled in the exact sciences, particularly mathematics. In 1996, she graduated from Dartmouth College with a degree in psychology. Although she initially contemplated following in her parents' footsteps and becoming a psychologist, a fateful accident changed the course of her career.

After injuring her back in a foolish accident, where she decided to sled down a local golf course on a tray, Kim spent a month in the hospital. This experience made her realize that she did not want to spend her life in hospitals. It was during this time that Kim discovered her passion for design. She enrolled in the Parsons School of Design and also worked at 'Allure Magazine' for a year before being let go.

Kim's foray into hat design began when she had a disastrous haircut and decided to cover her shaved head with a stylish hat. The hat attracted attention from strangers on the street, including actress Parker Posey. Soon, representatives from the New York boutique 'Bond 07' reached out to Kim, offering her the opportunity to create more unique hats. Similar offers came from 'Barneys,' prompting Kim to start her own business.

In 1997, Kim opened her first store in East Village while still working with photographer David LaChapelle. Initially, her parents were disappointed with her career choice, hoping she would pursue a different path. It took them six months to partially accept her decision.
Kim's unconventional approach to design sets her apart. Unable to draw, she found inspiration for her creations in unusual sources and used Microsoft Excel as her design tool. Through her struggles with disorders like obsessive-compulsive disorder and attention deficit disorder, Kim learned to channel her energy and use them to her advantage.
In 2004, Kim received the Perry Ellis Award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America. Two years later, she published her book, 'Saturday Night Hat: Quick, Easy Hatmaking for the Downtown Girl.'
To this day, stylish hats remain the highlight of Kim's fashion repertoire. Her innovative designs, made from luxurious fabrics and unique accessories, have won the hearts of celebrities such as Cameron Diaz, Madonna, Gwen Stefani, Gwyneth Paltrow, Lindsay Lohan, Britney Spears, Kirsten Dunst, and Christina Aguilera.
